So, you’re engaged—congratulations! 💍 Now comes one of the most exciting parts: finding your wedding dress!
If this is your first bridal appointment, you may be wondering what to expect. Maybe you’ve been looking at dresses online for months and have a Pinterest board full of ideas. Or maybe you have absolutely no idea what style you want—and that’s perfectly okay!
After all these years of helping brides find their wedding dresses, we’ve learned that there is no “right” way to shop for your gown. Every bride is different, and that’s what makes this experience so much fun.
Here are a few things we want you to know before you come to Bridal Boutique.
1. You Don’t Have to Know What You Want
Please don’t feel like you need to walk through our door knowing exactly what kind of dress you want.
We hear this all the time:
“I have no idea what I want!”
That’s okay. Really!
You may have a few pictures saved on your phone, or you may only know that you want to feel “romantic,” “simple,” “elegant,” or “not too princessy.”
That’s enough for us to get started.
One of the best parts of shopping for your wedding dress is discovering what looks and feels good on you. Sometimes the dress you end up loving is completely different from what you originally imagined.
So bring your inspiration pictures—but keep an open mind!
2. Please Have a Budget in Mind
Before your appointment, think about how much you feel comfortable spending on your wedding dress.
And remember, your wedding gown is just one part of your complete bridal look. You may also want a veil, accessories, and alterations, so keep those things in mind when setting your overall budget.
We are happy to work with you and show you gowns that make sense for your budget.
Our goal isn’t to put you in a dress that makes you uncomfortable financially. We want you to be excited about your dress AND your wedding!
3. You Don’t Need to Bring a Crowd
We know it’s tempting to invite everyone you love to your bridal appointment.
Mom. Grandma. Sisters. Bridesmaids. Future mother-in-law. Best friends…
But here’s our honest advice: bring the people whose opinions you really value.
Too many opinions can sometimes make a fun experience confusing very quickly!
Your wedding dress is a very personal decision. We want you to be able to hear your own voice and pay attention to how you feel in the dress.
Bring the people who will make you laugh, make you feel beautiful, and support you when you say, “I think this might be the one!”
4. What Should You Wear to Your Appointment?
You don’t need to dress up for us!
Wear something comfortable and easy to change out of. Nude or neutral-colored underwear is always helpful, and if you already have a strapless bra, feel free to bring it.
Don’t worry if you don’t have the “perfect” undergarments or shapewear. You do not need to go shopping before you come shopping!
If you already have your wedding shoes, bring them. If you haven’t picked your shoes yet, that’s completely fine too.
Most importantly, come comfortable and ready to have fun.
5. Bring Your Inspiration—But Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something Different
Show us everything!
If you have saved pictures from Pinterest, Instagram, or a designer’s website, bring them along. They can give us a great idea of what you’re drawn to.
But here’s where we may surprise you.
Sometimes we’ll pull a dress, and you’ll say:
“Oh, that’s definitely not something I would pick.”
And we’ll say:
“Just try it.” 😊
And sometimes…that’s the dress!
We know wedding dresses can look completely different on a hanger than they do on a real bride. So don’t automatically eliminate something because you don’t love it on the rack.
You never know what might surprise you.
6. Tell Us What You Really Think
We promise—we won’t be offended!
If you don’t like a dress, tell us.
If you love the skirt but hate the neckline, tell us.
If you don’t like the fabric, tell us.
If you have no idea why you don’t like it, that’s okay too!
The more honest you are, the better we can help you. We aren’t here to convince you to buy a dress you don’t love. We’re here to help you figure out what you DO love.
And sometimes trying on a dress you don’t like teaches us more than trying on one you love.
7. Don’t Worry About the Size on the Dress
This is important!
Bridal sizing is different from regular clothing sizes.
So if the number on the sample gown is different from what you normally wear, please don’t let it bother you.
Most sample gowns are not going to fit you perfectly. That’s normal. We can clip and adjust the gown so you can get a better idea of how it will look when it’s made for you.
The number on the tag doesn’t matter.
How you feel when you look in the mirror—that’s what matters.
8. Give Yourself Time to Enjoy It
Wedding dress shopping shouldn’t feel like you’re trying to squeeze in a quick shopping trip between errands.
Give yourself enough time to relax, try different gowns, talk with your consultant, and enjoy the experience.
And if you’re planning to visit multiple bridal shops, don’t schedule your appointments too close together. Give yourself some breathing room.
You may find your dress at the first shop.
You may need to visit a few.
Either way, enjoy the process.
These are moments you’ll remember long after the wedding day is over.
9. Don’t Feel Like You Have to Try on 20 Dresses
We’ve had brides come in and say:
“I heard you’re supposed to try on at least 10 or 20 dresses.”
Nope!
There is no magic number.
Some brides find their dress on the first appointment. Some need to try several different styles before they know what they love.
And sometimes you don’t need another dress—you just need to step back, take a breath, and look at the one that’s already making you smile.
If you find yourself thinking, “I don’t want to take this dress off,” that’s worth paying attention to!
10. Don’t Be Surprised If You Get Emotional
You might cry.
You might laugh.
You might get goosebumps.
You might stare at yourself in the mirror and suddenly picture walking down the aisle.
Or maybe you won’t have a big emotional moment at all.
That’s okay too!
Every bride experiences it differently.
There is no requirement to cry when you find your dress. There is no “perfect” reaction.
What we’re looking for is that feeling of:
“This feels like me.”
That’s what matters.
11. Remember—We’re Here to Help!
You don’t have to know all the bridal terminology.
You don’t have to know the difference between every silhouette.
You don’t have to know what fabric you want.
And you definitely don’t have to become an expert in wedding dresses before your appointment.
That’s our job!

And if you change your mind halfway through the appointment?
That’s okay too!
